There are numerous opiate addiction medicines that help with withdrawals and cravings.  But, Vivitrol happens to be one of the newest and best medicines that exist today.  There is Suboxone and Methadone that can be used to treat Heroin and Opioid addiction.

Both of these act to trick the brain into thinking its opiate receptors are in action.  This helps to prevent cravings.  It also helps to drastically reduce withdrawal feelings. Treament for heroin opioid addiction

However, as with all medications, there are side effects.  For example, Suboxone can be addictive in and of itself.   Patients being prescribed Suboxone will have to wean off this medication just like they would need to do with pain pills or heroin if possible.  Your body does become dependent on Suboxone.

However, the benefits out-weight the negative side effects because if Suboxone can help you stop taking heroin or pain pills…then it is worth it.

Freedom from Addiction

A drug manufacturer is at it again. Manufacturer, Alkermes, the maker of Vivitrol, is cashing in on the opioid epidemic. They are successfully lobbying legislation to pass bills in support of Vivitrol. Vivitrol is an opioid blocker which should prevent addicts from experiencing euphoria if they take heroin or pain killers. It also cuts cravings.

These are also the properties of Methadone and Suboxone. Vivitrol is costly at $1000 for a shot that remains in the system for one month. Alkermes made $209 million in 2016 through their lobbying efforts coast to coast.

They are alleged to be giving misinformation about Methadone and Suboxone and purposefully lobbying to restrict their use. Listen in to this opiate support group as they talk about this issue.

  2. Have you ever taken any of these withdrawal and craving medications? What do you think about them? Are you just replacing one drug for another? Some people think that. I my opinion if a medicine helps you stay clean then by all means take it responsibly and with the help of your Doctor.

  3. Vivitrol was not around when I was in rehab about 6-7 years ago. I did however, take Suboxone and it was very helpful. It was not fun weaning off Suboxone though. It served its purpose for sure!
