IS OPIATE ADDICTION A CHOICE, DISEASE, NEITHER OR BOTH?

Opiate Addiction:  Disease Or Choice?

This is a typical question that has been debated many times.  This is a very important question to ask because the answer relates directly to how we handle Opiate Addiction, Detox, Recovery and Relapse issues.

We do know that opiate addiction is genetic.  Addiction gets handed down from generation to generation just like alcoholism.  This is a proven fact.  The statistics regarding genetic addiction support this claim.

If one parent is an addict, the child has a 53% chance of becoming the same.  If both parents are addicts, the child has a 98% chance of becoming an addict if they ever consumer opiate drugs.

Through years and years of personal experience as well as decades of research, it is our opinion that Opiate Addiction is BOTH a Choice and a Disease.  This is in some circumstances.

A person has to first choose if they want to consumer opiates or opioids  (Heroin or Pain Pills).  They must decide if they want to try Heroin for the first time or pop some opioid pills that their friend gave them.   opiate cravings

This is indeed a choice.  No one is making them take the drugs.

However, if addiction runs in their family genes,…they will become a ‘diseased’ opiate addict.  The situation goes from a Choice to a Disease.

Now, in many situations…(probably the majority)  Doctors legally prescribe opioid pain medications to patients.  This is not necessary a choice.

If someone is in severe physical pain and their Doctor tells them to take pain pills….most people are going to listen to their Doctors and take the medication.

If their is a genetic predisposition to addiction, this patient could become a full addict.

There are a lot of variable involved, therefore making it difficult to say whether Opiate Addiction is 100% a CHOICE or 100% a DISEASE.  Every person’s situation is different as you can see.

The best way that we can learn about Opiate Addiction and figure out better ways to fight addiction is to listen to recovering addicts give their valued opinions.

The Opiate Epidemic must be tackled from numerous perspectives.  Current addicts need better detox and recovering methods.  Our young school kids need to learn about the dangers of opiate addiction while they are young.

We need to drive it home to them that they should never, ever partake of any drugs.

We need to teach people about the genetics of addiction and how they can stop the cycle in their family.  This crisis CAN be defeated and this is exactly why we exist.   Opioid Addiction
